I deleted my preferences and indeed it was one of my plugins, but the question is how do you know which plugin is the problem?

It would take a long time to individually keep deleting one and re-opening the project when you have something like 15 plugins on it.

That worked.. thanks for saving me from a heart attack! I upgraded from XP to Win 7 Ult. and then none of my projects would open! Sample file in Battery 3 was not found and I tried to "Locate" it but Live 8 would just freeze at 'Loading set' after that. Tried everything in vain and finally hit up this page. Deleted the preferences.cfg file and everything loaded up fine. I also deleted all .cfg files in the 'Crash' folder.

CAUTION: Do NOT delete any .als files anywhere (including the Crash folder).

Now, if you need to relocate any missing samples on Battery, just skip it when loading the set and try relocating the sample from within Battery after the set has loaded.

Again, thanks for the heads up, saved me a lot of pain!

I lost 3 live sets i was working on a few days ago, im really bummed it was over two months of work every day. Here is what happened. I was cleaning out my desktop and I must have threw away something that ableton saved there because when I went to open the set it shows as a missing file. I found some recovery software that found the missing songs but when I try to open them I get this message "An error occurred while reading "C:\Users\Mike\Desktop\Sept 2nd_002.als. "Apparently the document was created by a more recent, and incompatible, version of Live than this". I dont know what esle to do...The file should work on this version of live. It was working before. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You could use a footwitch plugged in to a midi key...

You could use a footwitch plugged in to a midi keyboard. A momentary switch is the same as the regular cheap sustain pedals aren't they?
Also, the eowave footcontrol will give you midi for up to four footswitches/expression pedals.

The tip from PEADAR worked for me...thanks a lot! you saved me DAYS of hard work....

but id like to add a tip:

Once you9ve recovered your .als crashedfile, you must opent it and BEFORE you re-save it, you must find the "suspect" plugin or audio smple that may be the cause of the problem.

Only when the corrupt item has been removed (this is based on whuch you think it is) you can save it and keep on your work.

I was trying all this in vain when I came across abletons' crash folder. Apparantely when ableton crashes it creates a copy of the live set @ C:\Documents and Settings\P-Hocto\Application Data\Ableton\Live 8.0.4\Preferences\Crash. I flicked through there and sure enough my corrupted track was there and it opened fine, although I had to move it to the live set folder of the original file and then search missing files. Wow, I'm so happy! And to think that if ableton didn't crash at one point while I was making that track I would have lost everything!

Hey Tomasz, just for you I made a new "Ableton Live" chapter for the Ardour FLOSS Manual:

Of course I'm not a Live user, so I can't say if it imitates everything that Live does, but I found it very easy to build up and duplicate rhythmic tracks in Ardour.

Thank you for your efforts on making this site and providing us with information. I was about to order three items (and really not the cheapest ones) with combined shipping from Laconic Records, but I suppose I'm better off with Thomann instead. I'm patient? No I'm not! I'm actually perpetually impatient and feeling under-stimulated, impatience is supposed to be supposed a programmer's virtue though. I just happen to think that new users ask the best questions and make the best comments.

I do suppose that "now" is indeed a object but I never looked at it that way. What would this mean? "class Moment extends now {//etc.." seems to make sense at the intuitive level, if at none other.

More seriously; even a short exposure will fundamentally change your perspective on time and timing in music. Frequency, after all, is purely a function of time. For a while that was the main thing I got out of it all but that's a pritty good thing to get, I'd say, and your post made me remember those days.
